Today, my boyfriend and I decided that we were tired of our VERY old, hard, uncomfortable mattress that is over 15 years old. We have been sleeping on this mattress together for about 5 years. It is definitely the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on. It is hard as a rock! When we moved in together 2 years ago we decided that we would put his bed in our bedroom because its a King size (once you go king size its impossible to go back) even though my bed is MUCH more comfortable. This was fine with me, I mean its not like its impossible to sleep on, I just know there are way more comfortable beds out there.
Anyway, back to the point :), I was looking for deals online as I often do, and saw that Sears was having a sale of 60% Off on their mattresses. Now, this sounds like a really great deal to me so I go online to check it out. As I am searching I find a Sealy Union LTD Plush Pillowtop King Size mattress for $399! This deal sounds great, so I do a review check, as I ALWAYS do before I buy anything. I find a site with five reviews, two are very poor reviews and three are excellent reviews. The two people who gave the mattress 1 star out of 5 say that the bed feels amazing the first time you lay on it, but after three months the bed loses its shape, develops bumps, and grooves making this once extremely comfertable bed VERY uncomfertable. Now, keep in mind, that these reviewers both said the SAME thing. The other three reviews however, talked about how amazingly comfertable this bed is, but didn't give the amount of time that they had slept on the bed. After reading these reviews, I decided that I was going to go to Sears and try out the bed for myself. Even if this specific matterss didn't work out, maybe I would find one that would.
After all of this research, I get to Sears and ask an employee where the mattresses are located, the woman tells me that they don't have the mattresses in the store, you have to buy them online. I am boggled by this answer, I mean, who wants to buy a bed online without trying it out first. There is no way I am going to take the chance of purchasing such an important item online without trying it out. Needless to say we left sears and went to a few independant mattress stores in the area.
The first independent store we tried looked a little sketchy, but we went in anyway. I tried out a few of the beds, but they all seemed a little cheap. Now, I know at first at the beginning of this post I was talking about purchasing a cheap mattress, but after doing some more research, talking to the sales people, and trying out several different beds, I realize that mattresses are investments. They will last you hopefully AT LEAST 10 years and you just can't put a price on a good nights sleep. So now, with this new outlook, I am more comfertable with spending a larger amoutn of money. Back to the story, we found a bed that we thought was pretty comfortable, but wanted to shop around a little more so we left promising that we would be back if you didn't find something better.
We go a few more places until we end up at the winning store. This store has a much larger selection and the sales person seems to know a lot about the inner workings of mattress and what kind of support each different type of mattress provides. He shows us the best selling mattress in the store it is AMAZING. It is SOOO comfortable I could have fallen asleep right then and there. This mattress is on sale for $1034, which a bit more than I had planned on spending in the beginning, but again I say that a mattress is an investment for a good nights sleep and will most likely last you AT LEAST 10 years, so once you divide the total price by 10 the mattress is only costing you about $100 a month. Now, isn't a good nights sleep that leaves you refreshed instead of exhausted worth a measly $100 a month? I think so, but that is just my opinion personally.
Alright, so after several stores and hours of searching for the perfect mattress, we think we have finally found the winner, it is a Southerland Mattress with a memory foam pillowtop that is SOOO comfortable (I would tell you the exccat model, but it has left my head at the moment). So, we fill out a financing application and wait for the resutl. After about 30 seconds the salesman tells us that our applicaiton is declined! I am shocked, my boyfriend (he filled out the application) has a great job and good credit, how did he get rejected? We are both stunned and confused by this, he can buy a $25,000 truck, but he can't open a credit line for a $1000 mattress? I am still pretty sad about this outcome, because after all of that, we had to leave the store leaving the mattress and a little bit of our self esteem behind.
I would love to hear any opions from people about why his application for a line of credit to purchase a mattress was declined, but he has been able to obtain financing for several different cars, trucks, and boats over the years. I find this utterly perplexing and if anyone can shed some light on why this could have happened I would love to hear it.
